In the film “Terminator 2″, the Robot was made of a material that could break apart, change shape, and reassemble itself. In the film the material appeared like Mercury (and it probably was). This capability is now considered theoretically possible through Nano engineering, but probably a way off into the future..
In the meantime, an MIT Demonstration of a new Robotic materials shows that pliable robots will be arriving sooner. The new material can become both pliable and then rigid, shifting shapes along the way, so as to fit through tight spaces – such as the inside areas of the body, or in rescue and recovery missions. No doubt this will also be a handy capability for early generation terminators.
